Trader Joe’s To Set Up Shop In Berkeley
Sorry for the delays in posts, folks. For those of you who are interested, I am 0-for-1 on law school apps so far, it’s finals season, LiveJournal/The Clog are stalking me*, and I’ve been recruiting other new bloggers to CalStuff. But I wanted to come out of retirement because there is finally a place in Berkeley for me to by Dark Chocolate Covered Raisins and the best $2 wine in the land. Yes, Berkeley is now home, for it has a Trader Joe’s.
Given, the city could still screw this up. The Berkeley zoning board will probably face appeal in front of the Berkeley City Council, and neighborhood associations are already threatening to file lawsuits to stop the re-development of the land at University and MLK. But let’s face it: people like the food, they like the prices, they already drive to Emeryville to get it, and the city needs the tax revenue. Dona Spring, the district’s representative on the City Council, has seemingly endorsed the proposal already, so it should be close to a lock. There may be some traffic increases, but it’s hard to see there being serious negative ramifications for this store - except for the fact that it’s foreign owned and non-union. I’m sure we can work out those kind of details earlier. Seriously, did I mention the $2 wine?
PS* - Clog folks, seriously. You could’ve picked a worse FaceBook picture, but you could’ve definitely picked a better one.

Dude, I didn’t know you were applying to law skoo. Sorry to hear about the rejection. I’m always eager to impart my meager wisdom on would-be legal scholars. Send me an email and let me know where you’re applying.

Got the sad news from Georgetown last week. It was one of my top choices, but I’ll start hearing from other schools in January. I’m pretty optomistic I’ll get into some of these other schools.

Just wish you’d clarify in your post, when you write, “Given, the city could still screw this up,” it’s not the City of Berkeley that would potentially screw this up - people in Berkeley want this, so does the City Council.
Rather, it’s the hysterical obstructionist preservationists that would do everything in their power to keep Trader Joe’s (and the Two-Buck Chuck) out of Berkeley.

The Berkeley city council would do well to also reverse their ridiculous preservationist policies in West Berkeley also.
The place could be turned into a technology and startup mecca; instead it’s maintained “blue collar charm” by spewing chemicals into the air. Nothing like dumpy old warehouses to signify success!

I got top 2% in the law school exam and I didn’t even apply or major in pre-law. I bet computer science majors could probably all do a pretty good job on that test.
