If You Build It, They Will Come

Chipotle is finally here. The new Chipotle is officially opening tomorrow on the 2300 block of Telegraph, between American Apparel and Bank of America. Today Chipotle is giving out free food to all students from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. Around 12:10 p.m., the line for the freebies was already incredibly long, wrapping around the corner of Bank of America.

I can’t really attest to the appeal of Chipotle. I’ve only been once, when I was decidedly not sober. Those chips were pretty delicious though.

Chipotle’s arrival on Telegraph is more than just adding a “good” food place to the area around campus. Some argue that in the effort to revitalize Telegraph, the city seems to be selling some of the old 60’s/hippie “charm” to a profitable consumerism. For others, the Telegraph upgrade is a step in making the neighborhood more attractive and allowing it to thrive.

Walgreens is also expected to open soon on the same block of Telegraph, in the old Gap building, next to Rexall.

  1. I’ve heard a vicious rumor that the “Rexall’s” is nothing but a mom and pop drug store that kept up the sign for whatever reason, and is no more or less a Rexall than the store near the corner of Bowdwitch and Durrant. Is it true?

  6. sorry people. chipotle is defiantely NOT good! Come on this is California - we ave some of the best tacs burritos and chips in the WORLD. And you want to eat at this crappy chain!?!? Sheesh.

  7. Chipotle IS good, despite what “noooo” thinks. The problem is that you’re trying to compare Chipotle to other types of “Mexican” food. Most of what you get at “Mexican” restaurants and taco trucks isn’t even authentic anyway. Chipotle falls into a category with Baja Fresh, 360 Burrito, High Tec Burrito, etc. Just because it isn’t the type of “Mexican” food you like doesn’t mean it isn’t good. Chipotle is much better than the other restaurants that serve comparable food. If you prefer to eat cow brain tacos out of a taco truck, then that’s up to you.

  9. The attraction was so hot it burst into flames?

Firetrucks were in the middle of Sproul about 1:30 pm today, too. I was too lazy to follow them and see where they were going.

  10. Rexall is definitely going to be shafted when Walgreens opens up right next door to it–and considering all the times I’ve been ripped off there (they once tried to sell my roommate duct tape for $12), I can’t say I’ll be sorry to see it go.
