Media Blitz
I’m working six days a week now, and it’s hard posting consistently. However, there’s been a slew of Cal related media that has been discussed but not posted yet. These articles are worth a read through, when you get a chance.
Contra Costa Times covers ASUC Debacle - Beetle’s Analysis
Berkeley Daily Planet Covers Action Item 42
Daily Californian Covers Action Item 42
Coalition Op-Ed Against Action Item 42 - Beetle’s Analysis
Beetle’s Analysis of Action Item 42
Calaholic’s Analysis of Action Item 42
Worst. Daily. Cal. Correction. Ever. I mean, this is just poor taste.

Man, your constant inferiority complex about the Daily Cal and the need to rag on them is out of control.
They got a name spelled wrong. It just so happens that the person was dead, but since when did the person’s breathing status have anything to do with spelling? Unless there was intent, an accident is an accident and has nothing to do with having a heartbeat.
You guys really need to chill on your obsession with the DC. They’re better than you — accept it and move on.

Not to be rude but if we want beetle’s analysis couldn’t we just go to beetle’s site? I mean, is he a calstuff corespondent now?
Comment by Tommaso Sciortino — July 26, 2006 @ 8:06 am
that’s the thing about these newfangled “blogs”…. they often link to other blogs that the blogger finds interesting…. imagine that….

The student elections are old news; isn’t anyone else just worried about the impending magnetic pole shift?

If the Earth wants to say something on the issue, it can post a comment.

I’m sorry but the Daily Cal is just awful. They do a really terrible job. That’s not to say they don’t work hard or that it isn’t a hard job, but after years of reading lousy headlines, poorly written stories, and incoherent quotes, it’s pretty clear to this planet that the Daily Cal’s staff is either inept or just plain lazy.
Mispelling a name is not a big deal. But you expect a student newspaper to either be good, or to make up for it by at least writing or commenting on things from a perspective you can’t get anywhere else. Instead the Daily Cal is both bad AND boring and staid. Frankly, I weep for our friends the trees who must so valiantly give their lives 3 times a week so the Daily Cal can push any interesting news below the fold to make space for important topics like “Students Enjoy Boba” or a picture of a dog on telegraph.

The Earth just made my day.

Now Tomasso, you see that, that bitterness in your post? That’s the harmonic shift in the EMF talking, not you!
Comment by Your friends, The Trees — July 26, 2006 @ 2:27 pm
Dear Earth,
While it may be true that Daily Cal employees are indeed lazy (myself as exhibit A), and while we may sometimes have poorly written stories and lousy headlines, we are only inept about 50% of the time. Anyway, everyone knows that the sports section and the crossword puzzle carry that newspaper and are largely the best part of that particular publication. That is all.
Signed,

Well we dont have to worry about the waste of paper, Wifi’s killing all the trees anyways.
Comment by Josh M. — July 26, 2006 @ 2:40 pm
Last year, under Chris “Let’s root for U$C to beat us” Nguon, the sports column was just something to fill the other side of the page that contained the ever-important crossword.
I don’t know you, but I wish you luck in doing a better job (and you will).

Don’t forget to check out the Cal Patriot blog for some magic chalk!

Thanks for the good wishes. I plan to have a lot more fun with the column, a la Grant Marek.

And why hasnt the council come out with their decission yet. I am guessing that they still dont care about the asuc more than they care about themselves. I hear an excuse for them taking so long that it is due to summer so we should give them credit.
What I think is that if you are going to be making controversial decissions, then it is also your job to deal with them in an urgent manner. That is what responsibility is about. Maybe SA has made some mistakes but the council sure should not be left off the hook either.
Comment by anonymous — July 26, 2006 @ 10:12 pm
What’s up with the SA anonybots seeming like they speak english as a second language? [Not that there is anything wrong with that… I’m just struck by the repeated bad grammar and bad spelling and awkward constructions.]
Comment by Andy R. — July 26, 2006 @ 10:25 pm
Maybe Manny is sending them.
Comment by Beetle — July 26, 2006 @ 10:26 pm
yeah, fuck the judicial council, SA received the popular vote and thus is better than all of you. my logic is undeniable!!
Comment by anonybot — July 26, 2006 @ 10:40 pm
the problem is that the daily cal stands in for berkeley’s nonexistent undergrad journalism major, whereas at other schools it’s part of a wider, faculty-led program. so a lot of people work at the dc who just think ‘hey, what would it be like to work for a newspaper?’, and don’t necessarily receive the training they need.
this might be the case at other schools i’m not aware of who manage to have better newspapers, so i’m not saying that this excuses the paper’s poor quality. any publication claiming to serve the public voice should be expected to live up to certain standards.
Comment by wayne — July 26, 2006 @ 10:44 pm
Number 16,
If the popular vote actually mattered then Al Gore would be president today. And then nobody would be able to make movies about global warming. And we all know that your life would never be complete without seeing An Inconvinient Truth.
So basically, the Student Action slate should stop trying to force their way into office and focus on making documentaries that help the world. Life would be so much better.
Comment by Andy M. — July 26, 2006 @ 11:03 pm
To actually answer your question, my guess as to why they are taking so long is that they know that Student Action will sue either the Judicial Council or individual justices in real court in response to their decision and so they need it to be perfect.
[That makes it kind of ironic that SA people are whining about the length of time for a decision to come out, considering that it very well might be taking this long because the Judicial Council has to draft a decision that will leave no room for SA to file an actual lawsuit over…]
Comment by Andy R. — July 26, 2006 @ 11:03 pm
Andy M: I don’t think comment 16 was serious. Check the signature. I’m pretty sure the person who posted comment 16 was making fun of student action people.
[Then again I could be wrong, as Student Action often behaves in the same way that I suspect people attempting to satirize them would behave. Kinda like how the Bush Administration tends to act out Onion headlines a year or two after they have already run as satire…]
Comment by Andy R. — July 26, 2006 @ 11:06 pm
After a long night of drinking, it’s hard to tell who’s serious and who isn’t.
Comment by Andy M. — July 26, 2006 @ 11:10 pm
Number 18,
your comment about Al Gore is irrelevant. in the ASUC, it IS the popular vote that matters (barring any scandals and whatnot).
Comment by tom — July 27, 2006 @ 6:47 am
Isn’t Al Gore irrelevant regardless?
