Berkeley Student Arrested In Orange County
The Orange County Register is reporting that a UC Berkeley student has been arrested for attacking a Hummer.
Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Matthew Barr said Aaron Nicholas Diek, 21, allegedly tried to block the Hummer driver with his sign and the driver attempted to drive around him. The Hummer was dented in the rear quarter panel of the passenger side.
The Hummer driver then chased Diek, police said, who attempted to escape on a bicycle. Diek was arrested on suspicion of vandalism and giving false information to police.
I do think that this might be the first successful environmental protest that a UC Berkeley student has been involved in. The hat tip to for this piece of news comes from Waste Today, who presents an interesting piece of commentary:
A Hummer is a pretty sturdy vehicle, a cardboard or poster-board sign is unlikely to dent the thing. It is also easy to suffer cosmetic damage as a Hummer-piloting motorist since the vehicle is too wide for most streets and parking spaces. It is entirely possible that the dent was already in the vehicle and when the Hummer guy drove up to the demonstration they shouted shit at him, pissing him off, and causing him to cook up this story blaming an innocent and peaceful demonstrator.
During the March 2003 protests, I was walking along with an angry group on Mission street, then a H1 or H2 came to pull out of a parking garage, and everyone just let them go by even though the project of the day was to completely block traffic in the financial district because people shouldn’t have been conducting business as normal and driving around in that neighborhood on the first day of the escalation.
