History/Pop-Cultural Analogy Contest
There are plenty of good answers to Beetle’s contest for new slogans for Student Action (see here and here). I was wondering if anyone has any good suggestions of historical or pop-cultural analogies that resemble this situation. Simon referenced Bananas in his entirely legitimate executive order, although I haven’t seen the movie, so I don’t know how well it fits. To me, I think the best reference is to this quote from Star Wars (which I coincidentally ran across today in a blog entry about US policy in Iraq):
Someone well versed in African politics suggested to me that Mugabe has done something similar to this in Zimbabwe, but I was wondering if anyone else has any good analogies.Tarkin: The Imperial Senate will no longer be of any concern to us. I have just received word that the Emperor has dissolved the council permanently. The last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away.

umm… didn’t this happened in 2000 with the Presidential election. the Election was in dispute and Jeb/Katherine + Court gave the election to George. Jeb/Katherine might as well be the EOs.

Andrew Jackson refused to adhere to Marshall’s decision in Worcester v Georgia… the Judicial Council has decided on this matter and Manny refused to abide by it, creating an executive order that spits in the face of the Judicial Council… Manny on our Buy Back Bucks Please!
(big difference… thousands of SA opponents are not being slaughtered… but I bet they feel like the Association is being massacred)

Um, this one time when J Lo was at the club and there was a shootout, and then Puffy offered the driver her diamond to say the gun was his, and then everyone got arrested… no wait, this isn’t like that at all.

Well no, Ben. The highest court decided the election. It woudl be like Bill Clinton issuing an EO to overturnt he Supreme court decisiona nd give the election to Gore.

this reminds me of the time when sjp took over wheeler hall and roberto bit a cop and then the university wouldn’t give him his diploma and then he had to leave grad school because he couldn’t get his fellowship money because he didn’t have a diploma.

Student Action’s theme song, with apologies to the Stonecutters:
Who controls the students’ crown?
Who keeps the Judicial council down?
We do!
We do!
Who writes EO’s full of shit?
With hairspray all over it?
We do!
We do!
Who holds back Igor Tregub?
Who makes Suken a big boob?
We do!
We do!
Who robs JC’s oversight
Who rigs each election night
We do!
We doooooooooo!

Well, in terms of the risks to autonomy, one might say the Australian Constitutional Crisis of 1975 might work here, with Manny as the Prime Minister, the J-Council acting as the Australian Senate withholding supply, the Chancellor acting as Governor-General ready to use reserve powers if the crisis can’t be resolved. But who does the Chancellor appoint as President?
