Constitutional Crisis Humor Contest
The ongoing Constitutional crisis is obviously serious business, and the autonomy of the ASUC or the continued meaningful existence of the Judicial Council might hang in the balance.
That being said, this whole situation is hilarious. It isn’t every day that a two-bit student government President starts acting like a third world dictator. [And I mean literally. In fact, I think we could probably do a little historical research and find a petty dictator somewhere who did exactly the same thing that Manny did.]
Anyway, Beetle (who you should be reading every day) is having a humor contest:
My two favorites so far:Contest! Come up with your own slogans or one-liners for SA.
Head on over there and offer your own suggestions.“Streamlining the democratic process: DONE!”
“Student Action: By Any Means Necessary!”

Students First! Every Student! Every Year! Except 2006.

Delivering what you deserve…
No really, if people don’t fight SA then they deserve it.

Why is CalSERVE being so quiet on this? You’d think they’d rather work with Lauren than Oren…do they hate the Judicial Council that much?

I’m not sure why you think that. Student Action and CalSERVE have a system in place, and tend to avoid being overly critical of each other. Student Action, for instance, was almost totally silent on No on 54.

the feeling I’ve gotten from the parties is that each simply looks at their mission in the ASUC as being something different. student action performs duties that rely mainly on student entertainment etc, and CalSERVE is dedicated to further civil service and activism using the capabilities provided by the ASUC. But both parties seem to at least respect each other and leave critical assessment and choice up to the student body.

That’s really not true. SA spends a lot of their time villifying CS and being suspicious of their every move. CS seems to think that SA is unprincipled, which, yeah. This year the senate has been relatively drama free, but in ‘04-’05 the two parties were very openly contentious with each other, particularly Evan Bloom versus everyone with a soul. Norena Limon, Dena Takruri, Brent K–all were very outspoken and that senate was tense. Before that Jesse Gabriel and Co. erased all of the info off of the ASUC computers when CalSERVE swept the exec seats. And before Evan Bloom there was Devon Andre. Despite claims above, SA was extremely outspoken about the No on 54 scandal (and occassionally still are). SA and CS have a nice, long history of being at each other’s throats.
One of the things that people did say about Lauren during the campaign is how well she worked with both parties from her past roles in the ASUC. I expect that CalSERVE would much rather work with her than Oren, but they also know that they have to work with whomever wins this thing in the end and they don’t want to alienate anyone with public statements. And no matter what, they have to work with SA in the senate. There’s also the possibility, given that they weren’t involved in the exec race, that very simply no one has asked them.

So I had to see this for myself… I heard my name came up! Gosh, you miss so much excitement when you’re gone for 6 months. It’s great how the namecalling has escalated to talk about even more irrelevant topics. This has indeed turned from a blog with some occasional good reporting to shlock journalism and muckraking. I’ll say this for sure, I know where my soul lies and it’s far from shit-slinging pseudo-journalists and their minions. And I say this without a drop of sarcasm: for all of you spending your time raising your own self-esteem writing scathing commentary, please, feel free to use me as your personal punching bag. It’s quite entertaining.

Evan,
I would say the same thing about what Manuel has done to the ASUC Presidency. Except that’s worse, because it’s in an official context. People can be biased or immature on a blog as much as they please.

The thing about muckraking is there has to be muck to rake.

Even, well what about the facts, like the EO itself.

This is not CalSERVE’s issue. CalSERVE was not involved in the executive race at all, and therefore, while this is an issue that effects the entire campus, it is not an issue that CalSERVE should take the lead on.
