beetle: right, but I think where the material is sourced from is what matters. So, even if it's the same content, they own the content, and choose to release it in different forms. So you grab the newspaper copy, and you're grabbing the newspaper content.

This (the better distribution of the dc) sounds like a good idea - dc's website is so crappy (they're redesign was horrific - all they did was wrap a bunch of buzzy user-driven crap onto a bad interface. they really need to redesign it from the ground up).

The Daily Cal website did not display the same ads as were in the print edition, if I recall correctly. Online advertising and paper advertising seemed to be handled differently.

you probably can't post it as a blog, as they probably make most of their money off of ad revenue, so removing the ads might make advertisers angry. Also, you probably should post a counter of how many people hit the page, as the daily cal probably would find that useful (giving you more leverage if they don't like when you post the images).

Joe: Yeah, I was considering the blogger route and doing something like this: http://berkeleysnewspaperonline.blogspot.com/2006/06/executive-candidates-appeal.html

It certainly looks much nicer that way, the problem was just that because I don't have article text, I was converting pictures of the articles into PDF's and that took a while. Not to mention, a post for each article was also more time consuming. To put up each article in that format would probably have taken around an hour or two, and I didn't feel like putting in that much time last night. The Daily Cal actually having the text of the articles, could do something much nicer than posting photos of the pages, and you're right, posting the article text in blogger would be trivially easy for them.

Also: The Daily Cal could easily create a Blogspot account and post the articles online within minutes.
