ASUC Elections

Halfhearted campaigning has begun. If you haven’t been able to tell from the lack of posting, I am almost entirely uninterested in who is running, who will win, or any other aspects of student politics. That might change when spring break is over (or when I finalize a job for next year), especially if something scandalous happens or if I end up filing any lawsuits. And yes, I will be running again this year, as I have been slated by multiple parties. When spring break is over there will be an announcement about how CalStuff is seeking new writers, and if anyone is particularly interested in the ASUC, writing about previous elections has been some of the most fun that I have had with CalStuff.

Anyway, as far as slating goes, the Patriot Blog has some kind of guessing game going on here. Someone IMed me most of the Student Action slate a while ago but I can’t remember what they told me. I’ll ask again in the next couple of days (or someone can leave a comment if they know what’s going on). I have heard from two very knowledgeable sources that CalSERVE isn’t running an executive slate. I’m the BEARS United slate. And as far as Squelch goes, I know three of the four people, but I’ll ask Ben to post who we slated this year.

Anyone else hear any good gossip?

  6. today marks the end of ASUC politics. theyre no longer legit. i cant respect a student government where the winner is determined before the election starts. the asuc is no longer a legitimate governmental body… not that it ever was.

  7. for the love of god i hope you stop considering ed martinez a “knowledgeable source”

calstuff is dead. or was that calserve?

  8. This is either calserve’s stupidest mistake or most brilliant move.

    Comment by RepBast1984 — March 29, 2006 @ 10:40 am

  9. anon
ed is a very reliable source. he campaigned for several years, and on his second try he became senate aide. he was also the bill tracker. dont be racist.

    Comment by cheguevara — March 29, 2006 @ 11:09 am

  10. #7,

I got the info directly from the election council chair. If that’s not reliable enough for you I dunno what would be.
Cheguervara is right about me having been involved with elections in previous years as well as currently being the vice chair of the senate. The slates make sense given the histories of the parties and current situations they are in.

  11. Yes Ed and I helped create some of the same monsters in the past. Sadly.

    Comment by RepBast1984 — March 29, 2006 @ 11:46 pm

  12. Wow, I’m shocked that CalSERVE isn’t running any executive candidates if that’s true. No idea how I’ll vote now …

    Comment by Jim Fung — April 1, 2006 @ 3:32 am

  13. If you support the GA, you shouldn’t vote, because grad students cost the GA money every time they vote. Or will, once the new quasi-autonomy referendum passes.

  14. i think you guys misspelled a name

    it should be Ali Ansary

  15. what the hell is the mario party

    Comment by Anonymous — April 2, 2006 @ 12:34 pm

  16. Beetle, if nothing else I would need to vote in order to vote for the autonomy referendum, wouldn’t I?

But actually I would vote anyway. I think it’s good for the ASUC to represent all the students, and if there are more grad students voting, that only strengthens representation for everyone in my opinion, even if it costs the GA more money.

    Comment by Jim Fung — April 2, 2006 @ 7:18 pm

  17. I just find the concept of funding tied to constituent voting turnout somewhat troubling.

    Comment by Beetle — April 2, 2006 @ 9:19 pm

  18. Yeah, it has perverse incentive effects. I agree with you. But I’m still going to vote for the autonomy agreement anyway. It’s time to get that settled! They’ve been going back and forth on that stuff since I was an undergrad.

    Comment by Jim Fung — April 2, 2006 @ 9:25 pm

  19. Hey, me too! But I’m not going to vote for these half-assed autonomy measures. GA either needs to go for autonomy, or not go for autonomy. This certainly won’t settle the issue. Other aspects of the referendum are just as silly. (e.g. three undergrads on the judicial council must be booted for cases dealing with the GA) There’s no reason the ASUC and GA can’t work together while seperate bodies.
