Drunk Stanford Tree is Fired

I imagine most of you have heard this by now (and thanks to everyone who sent me the link), but this newspaper article about the drunken Stanford tree is worth reading. The article in the Stanford Daily is much better, but their website seems to be down at the moment. (Actually down, not just me being a retard and thinking it’s down when it really isn’t.)

Anyway, the article linked above is described as being “AP Breaking News” which I hope is some type of mistake. This is the best response that I have seen so far:

The Stanford Tree is now part of the Mascot Hall of Fame for getting caught drinking inside the costume. The Tree must have been running hog wild, for according to the police, she was able to drink from a flask inside the tree (an impressive feat in its own right).

But it is ridiculous that a mascot over the drinking age should be given a breathalyzer test and cited for being drunk when part of a mascot’s job is to act drunk.

I should know. I was a mascot for four years (a wildcat), and I freelanced as a Subway Sandwich, and there are several unspoken rules of mascoting, three of which I will mention here:

1. Don’t take your head off in public.
2. Don’t speak when you are in the suit.
3. Don’t puke inside the head and/or full-body uniform because it is hard to clean out, and it’ll smell for weeks.

The drinking itself isn’t a problem, but that mascot was running the risk of breaking three big rules all at once. Mascot suits are hot. If you don’t believe me, try running laps in a sleeping bag for a few hours. You might puke based on that alone. Try drinking while running laps in a sleeping bag, and you will toss your cookies. Nothing smells worse than a mascot head after a game, and that’s without puking.

So maybe it is good that Stanford is rid of its drunken tree, but people really need to loosen up and cut the mascots a break!
