Blind Cal student sues Target for bad website

Bruce Sexton Jr., a third year student who is blind is suing Target for having a website that isn’t usable by the blind.

Target’s site lacks “alt-text,” an invisible code embedded beneath a graphic on the Web site that a screen reader could use to provide a description of the image to a blind person, the suit said.

Of course, so does Walmart and good possibly a number of other shopping sites don’t have much alt text either (to see what alt text there is, just go to the page and then in the menu bar click View> Page Source). I’m not against helping the blind, but this sounds like something that can be done easily and doesn’t require a law suit to do.

  1. Looks like you got scooped on this one: http://www.calpatriot.org/blog/2006/02/08/lawsuits-solve-everything/

Of course it doesn’t require a lawsuit to introduce alt-text (but fear of a lawsuit sure helps to pull it up from the “back burner” project status).

  2. This is stupid. Hello, when you’re blind, things are going to be a little different. If you don’t like the service a store provides, then take your money somewhere else. I hate frivolous lawsuits.

  3. blind guys have nothing to complain about…they’re the only males in this world who aren’t plagued by the memories of the ugly asian chicks they’ve had sex with while drunk.

  5. well, the daily cal gets points for actually covering something related to students, staff or faculty on campus. Usually they write about local seniors lawn bowling, or the intricacies of lunch at Berkeley high school.

  6. Here’s some news you should report. Christopher Wilson pled guilty to felony accessory to murder charges, and will testify at Hollis’ murder trial. He’ll be sentenced to between probation and 3 years in prison after the Hollis trial.
