Potential Halt in Fee Hikes
Hooray! (Contra Costa Times):
After seeing their tuition hiked every school year since 2002, more than 600,000 students at California’s public universities could get a reprieve next year under Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s soon-to-be-released budget plan, a senior administration official said Wednesday.
When he unveils his 2006-07 spending blueprint Jan. 10, newly brimming state coffers will allow Schwarzenegger to propose infusing an extra $130 million into the California State University and University of California systems.
This fall, the governing boards of both systems voted to raise fees as much as 10 percent next year. If Schwarzenegger’s proposed $100-billion-plus budget is ultimately approved by the legislature, fees would freeze for the first time since the 2002-03 academic year…
[Former CalSERVE candidate] Anu Joshi, the UC Berkeley graduate student who heads the statewide University of California Student Association, said UC and CSU students met with administration representatives Dec. 15 and made their case for holding the line on fees. After UC and CSU governing boards called this fall for a fifth year of fee hikes, “we realized we had to put all our pressure on governor,” she said.
“The students deserve all the credit for this,” Joshi said. “We’re so happy the governor has made higher education a priority. Because of the students, more Californians will be able to send their students to a UC.”
Snarky (but fair) response: I’m guessing that there will be absolutely no credit given to Schwarzenegger for this among the liberal Berkeley crowd that views our Governator as one of the horsemen of the Apocalypse…
Snarky (but unfair) response: I guess CalSERVE is actually good for something…

This isn’t the greatest news.
Sounds similar to the fee rollback that the myopic Bustamante spearheaded when economic times were good–leading to huge increases when times were bad.
Fees have to go up, but at a steady rate. This sounds like political posturing. Put the money back into financial aid, but don’t cut fee revenues for the University. Rich kids can afford to pay more.

fuck that, bhanu singh. what about those of us who can’t get financial aid and aren’t rich? kinda leaves us up a creek huh?

just because an assailant doesn’t hit you a fifth time doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be reviled for the first four. higher education clearly hasn’t been even close to one of his top priorities. he’s licking his wounds over getting his ass handed to him in the special election, doesn’t mean he’s suddenly a good governor.
