so this is what tedford gets 1.5M for?
Comment by mano — November 12, 2005 @ 1:59 pm
Ayoob is dyslexic! That would explain the first interception, where he clearly thought the receiver was running a different pattern.
I feel a bit bad for the guy, but seriously, I’d rather have Longshore in there with a broken leg right now.

do we think it would have been any different if whatshisname didnt break himself at the beginning of the season? tedford has never had full confidence in ayoob and it shows. he’s a constant nervous wreck.
Comment by Anonymous — November 12, 2005 @ 5:04 pm
Once again, Ayoob throws more INTs than TDs. The game didn’t rest on his shoulders, but he sure didn’t try to make it even close.
Let the petition to bench Ayoob begin!
Comment by Anti Ayoob — November 12, 2005 @ 5:30 pm
By the way, I forgot to mention, but I am starting to realize that Tedford doesn’t want to admit a mistake in keeping Ayoob.
*NOTE*: JT, YOU ARE DRAGGING THE TEAM INTO HELL FOR NOT ADMITTING YOUR MISJUDGEMENT. BENCH A QB WHO SIMPLY CANNOT PASS THE BALL ANYMORE.
We didn’t pay 1.5 mill to not give the team a fighting chance to win.
Comment by Anti Ayoob — November 12, 2005 @ 5:50 pm
Tedford’s approach to this game was awful. His play calling wasn’t aggresive in the slightest bit. You need to shoot for the end zone to beat USC.
Comment by Fan — November 12, 2005 @ 5:50 pm
I say bench Tedford.
Comment by Fan — November 12, 2005 @ 5:50 pm
Ayoob is a bust. There’s nothing that we can do about that now. and obviously, if there was anyone else on the team who could play QB, Ayoob would have been benched.
Tedford is not “clinging” to some mistake of his. If that was the case, Longshore wouldnt have been the starter at the beginning of the season, after Ayoob was recruited with much hype.
and Tedford can’t be aggressive in play calling with a QB who makes easy routine passes look like a struggle.
Cal still looks to be a perennial contender which is more than one could say a few years ago.. so calm down, freshmen.
Comment by tom — November 12, 2005 @ 6:09 pm
tom’s right. If Tedford had a better option at quarterback, he would have made a change already. Longshore is hurt, there’s no sense in burning Kyle Reed’s redshirt now (and as a true freshman, i doubt he has much understanding of the offense, Tedford would have to dumb it down more than he has already if Reed were playing), and honestly, Levy is not going to solve any problems.
Comment by captain anonymous — November 12, 2005 @ 6:16 pm
If we lose with Levy or with Ayoob, what’s the difference? Atleast Levy doesn’t have a stupid name or look retarded on TV.
Comment by Anonymous — November 12, 2005 @ 6:50 pm
Anyone see Longshore in full uniform today walkin around fine? Maybe putt him in against stanfurd? Or maybe too risky?
Comment by Bfeinberg — November 12, 2005 @ 8:36 pm
I’d say putting Longshore in against Stanfurd is still too risky. He’s probably okay to gear up and walk around, but at this point an average-strength hit would probably do more damage than it would under normal circumstances.
We saw Levy play today against USC’s backup defense, and he wasn’t bad. People may tar and feather me for this, but I say start Ayoob next week at the Big Game - he’s obviously no Aaron Rodgers, but he’s still played his heart out for this team. I’d feel differently if he’d been putzing around slacking off at practice, but everything I’ve heard from others on the football team indicate otherwise. Even if he IS well on his way to being the lowest-ranked QB in the Pac-10, he still deserves to take the first snap at the Big Game. I’ve said my fair share of harsh things about Ayoob, but I’ve never doubted that he’s TRYING - it just happens that the best he’s got right now isn’t cutting it. I’m not taking the whole “well none of you guys could do any better so shut up” argument, because I don’t believe in it - I definitely think that the expectation for Joe Ayoob should be higher than the expectation for say, me, since I’ve never played a game of football outside of middle school PE in my life and he’s been trained to play football. But I do think that just because he’s not doing well doesn’t mean he doesn’t care about the team, or that he hasn’t put in his share of the effort. So let him start the Big Game - he got thrust into this role unexpectedly and didn’t adjust well, but he’s tried to pull himself up and has stepped up at times, though not as often as many of us might have liked. My only caveat is that Tedford be willing to pull him out more quickly than was done today if Ayoob still shows that he’s not up to it.
Let the bashing of my stance begin.
Comment by One more game — November 12, 2005 @ 8:54 pm
Ooh, the Tom Holmoe defense. “Sure, he sucks, but he’s such a nice/dedicated guy.”
Comment by Beetle — November 12, 2005 @ 9:15 pm
There’s no way any coach would put in someone who broke his leg at the beginning of the season. Longshore may be moving and throwing, but he’s in no shape to be playing a football game. Since he didn’t even play one game this year, my guess is that he will get this year back as a redshirt. Does anyone know?
One more game - I’m not going to bash your stance. Ayoob’s started all the other games this year (minus Sac State of course). I expect Tedford to go with him.
The following doesn’t change anything, but I find it frustrating. Maybe I’m just tired of cocky attitudes by Pete Carroll, Matt Leinart, et al. I’m not denying the fact that they are damn good, so don’t get me wrong.
From espn.com: “That’s the best defense we’ve played all year, but by far the cheapest,” Cal guard Aaron Merz said. “I got spit on. I make a good block, and the guy spits on me. I saw that too many times today. It’s disgusting. I got poked in the eye. They had their hands in our facemasks all day.”
Comment by A — November 12, 2005 @ 9:25 pm
A: you have to miss 90% of your regular season games to qualify for a redshirt year, and Longshore does qualify.
Ayoob is going to start against Stanford, probably. To change QBs right now would be probably panicking.
Comment by ? — November 12, 2005 @ 10:16 pm
It’s a matter of confidence at this point to bench Ayoob or not. Right now he doesn’t have it, and you can’t start a QB who’s hesitant to pass with authority.
Tedford may still feel that Ayoob is better than Levy, not honestly you can’t start anyone who cracked in the tunnel after the game. To me, that’ just as risky at this point.
Comment by Anti Ayoob — November 13, 2005 @ 12:34 am
saw a guy wearing a “ayoob for heisman” shirt today getting escorted off the field by two cops. either he is incredibly moronic or incredibly ironic. most likely a bit of both.
Comment by ari — November 13, 2005 @ 12:55 am
Anti Ayoob: I don’t know if you remember Alexis Serna, the field goal kicker for OSU. After the LSU game last year (a 2 pt victory for LSU where OSU had missed 3 field goals), Alexis Serna was on the floor in the lockerroom, crying in the fetal position. All of this was shown on national TV because someone had the bright idea to put a camera in there.
Anyhow, the point being, Serna buckled up and became a phenomenal field goal kicker for the rest of the season, including earning a scholarship (He was a walk-on).
As such, I don’t think crying in the tunnel is necessarily precluding Ayoob from playing in the Big Game. Football is an emotional sport, and setting the level of expectation for our football players to be stoic statues is just not rational.
Ayoob will most likely start because Tedford has started with him all season: if Levy had been able to win out during practices, then he’d go in. Unfortunately, the marginal advantage gained by putting in a fresh Levy right now is rendered moot by the experience Ayoob has at this point.

“Ayoob is a bust. There’s nothing that we can do about that now. and obviously, if there was anyone else on the team who could play QB, Ayoob would have been benched.”
It took Tedford 3.5 humiliating losses to realize that he needed to use someone else. We paid him 1.5 million dollars to defend a douchebag that laughs when he screws up. If we don’t put Levy in, we’re goign to lose the axe. This leaves Longshore and Reed 2 awesome redshirt players for next year. We’re going to suffer from recruitment because of Ayoob the Boob but we really have a lot of hope afterwards.
If we end 7-4 that’s as good as Aaron Rodgers’ first year. If we lose the Big Game not only are we going to devolve into teh kyle Boller days, but we won’t even have the axe.
And to the person who said Ayoob was a dedicated guy who loves the team, he can be just as dedicated and root for the team on the bench or in the student section. Just don’t put him anywhere where he’s going to cause harm.

Ironically, Tom Holmoe is now Athletic Director of BYU, and they’re #2 in the Mountain West.

Let’s not knock the ‘Kyle Boller days.’ Boller’s the guy who made us good again with Tedford’s help. Boller’s the guy who took us from 1-10 to 7-4. Boller’s the guy who first got us the ax back 3 years ago.
Don’t knock Boller, who went out on the highest note we could have possibly expected.

In more important news, I hope someone here will increase publicity of the misappropriate use of funds by top UC execs, that the Chronicle is reporting. A nice, salient tidbit is that last year almost a billion dollars was spent on perks, bonuses, etc… more than enough to compensate for the 79% tuition hikes that we’ve seen. Fuck USC, focus on real news.
Comment by iliketapioca — November 13, 2005 @ 1:32 pm

>>It took Tedford 3.5 humiliating losses to realize that he needed to use someone else. We paid him 1.5 million dollars to defend a douchebag that laughs when he screws up.
Anonymity- It didnt take Tedford 3.5 losses to “realize” this. what makes you think that Tedford is even planning to use “someone else” yet?
My guess is that it took Tedford about 30 secs after Longshore went down to realize that we weren’t going to contend for the national title this year. Recall Ayoob’s 0-10 performance in the first game he played. Tedford already showed zero confidence in Ayoob by not giving him the starting job to begin with.
I’m sure that Tedford is desperately seeking other options, which includes re-evaluating Levy and Longshore each week. so my point remains.
If there was anyone else on the team who could play QB, Ayoob would have been benched. Against Stanford, it will probably be enough to have Ayoob hand the ball off to Lynch and Forsett on every down. If Tedford feels that Levy is ready, then it may be another story.
Comment by tom — November 13, 2005 @ 3:12 pm
so then you’re admitting that your claim “Ayoob is an embarassment in the classroom” was completely baseless and unfounded speculation?
well, guess what, your claim that “he wasn’t exactly an academic superstar coming in” is equally baseless. Have you seen his transcripts from high school and CCSF? Do you know what his SAT score was? Do you know how many AP courses he took?
bhanu singh is still an embarassment in the classroom
Comment by captain anonymous — November 13, 2005 @ 4:13 pm
Joe Ayoob was his highschool class valedictorian, a presidential scholar, and took 1,463 AP Courses, receiving a 5 on every exam (if the graders could have awarded 6’s they would have!)

The turnaround in the Cal football program since Tedford was hired clearly indicates his worth as a Division I coach, as does the fact that Cal has remained competitive despite a rash of injuries on both sides of the ball. Unfortunately, Joe Ayoob has not delivered on the potential suggested by his outstanding JC record; he is clearly not the one to lead Cal to the national championship. Coach Tedford, however, is the best thing to happen to Cal football during my lifetime, and he and the team deserve our continued support.
Comment by BR, Class of 1969 — November 13, 2005 @ 4:48 pm
whatever, how can you explain that second fieldgoal attempt. 1.5 million for that?
Comment by mano — November 13, 2005 @ 5:14 pm
Schneider missed a 41 yard attempt. Not exactly a walk in the park, though it’s still short of his longest successful kick. And the guy IS still our team’s leading scorer, putting up more points than Marshawn Lynch and Justin Forsett combined (though that probably speaks more to the overall ineffectiveness of our offense than anything else).
Comment by Blank — November 13, 2005 @ 6:51 pm
My point is that Tedford should have gone for it. Might have come up short, sure, but that was the exact moment when our spirit was broken - until then, we were still in the game. Tedford’s fault, not Schneider’s.
Comment by mano — November 13, 2005 @ 7:30 pm
Yeah, that is true. USC already had what, 28 points at the time? Something ridiculous.
Comment by Blank — November 13, 2005 @ 7:34 pm

Comment by jarod — November 14, 2005 @ 12:33 am
Bob: Generally, in the Pac-10 the leading scorer is usually not the kicker. In the NFL and other offensively challenged conferences (like the SEC), will the kicker usually be the top scorer.
Look at Pac-10 conference stats. We haven’t been as good as we were say, last year, when we usually punched it in the endzone.
But, then again, JJ and Rodgers were phenoms.
