Greek Social Code Passed Nearly Unanimously

A new, revised Greek Social Code has now been passed by IFC and the Panhellenic Council. This code has been held over the heads of the Greek leadership as a way to relieve the fading moratorium on events with alcohol, and this approval should see the final steps being taken on that path.

However, the treatment of the Greek Social Code in these negotiations proves nothing more that the rules themselves are irrelevant - it is the enforcement of regulations that is the major issue, and has not been completely resolved yet. Will IFC and PanHell assert their autonomy by enforcing the regulations? Will the autonomy be asserted by enforcing regulations selectively? Will the university continue to pursue its own agenda, at the expense of Greek autonomy?

This giant white elephant in the room has been resolved on paper, but not in practice, and as such, I am doubtful that these revisions will have any positive long-term effects for either university-Greek relations or the Greek community as a whole. Call it skepticism, cynicism, or reflection on the fact that the moratorium is no longer an extreme sanction, but a fairly regular practice on this campus. Never mind that that little tidbit has been blinded by the lack of institutional knowledge in the student body and in the Greek councils.

Finally, the solution of implementing a new GSC only helps IFC and PanHell. It does nothing to resolve the issue for all Greeks, and as such, there will be discrepancies, mistakes will be made, confusion will flourish, and this cycle is doomed to continue, fueled by the fires of poor press.
