Gas Leak at Foothill

An e-mail tip from M.M. alerted me to this story, and a quick google search turned up the Press Release from the Berkeley NewsCenter:

Foothill Student Housing and Stern Hall on the northeast side of campus have been evacuated following a gas leak. The problem occurred Monday afternoon (Sept. 26) when a delivery truck on Cycoltron Road near Foothill’s Building 6 apparently lost control while backing up, colliding with and breaking a gas line outside the building, according to UC Berkeley police.

No one was injured in the accident, and many students were not in the residence halls at the time. Campus police are stationed around the buildings to make sure students don’t enter the area while PG&E attempts to cap the gas leak. The Berkeley Fire Department also is on the scene.

The broken pipe is just outside Building 6. Police have shut off power to that building, as well as to two other Foothill buildings nearby, as a safety precaution.

The Foothill housing complex accommodates 776 students and 21 staff members, and Stern Hall houses 267 students and seven staff members.

Campus officials said they should know later Monday afternoon when students might be able to return to their residence halls.

Any freshman readers from either of those dorms have any comments?

  1. I’m a frosh from La Loma, and I was in my room when this happened. At 1:20, the fire alarm went off. It was 20 minutes later that we knew what the issue was and that it would take 2 hours or so to resolve it. The CBS 5 news truck even drove up and parked in the Upper Hearst lot driveway!

I’m glad I had class during most of that time..

  4. You’d be surprised at a lot of the things that could have been prevented that the people at the dorms never do. At foothill, they preach how safe an environment it is on the premises yet someone was raped last year. Similarly, at the units, they completely disregard real safety issues and pretend they solve them with “security monitors”, the most useless waste of University money.

They must be ignorant about the fact that students who live together in the dorms sometimes attack one another or give warning signs about dangerous behavior. If the authorities in the dorms act quickly enough they can stop a lot of problems but they’re too lazy/jaded by their quest for social justice that they compeltely miss the mark and find all sorts of unattended consequences.
