The interim Honorary Karen Kenney Dean of Students is going to be the Registrar, Susanna Castillo-Robson.

From the Daily Cal article:

To meet the demands of the additional job, Castillo-Robson will make daily rounds between her two offices, devoting the morning hours to her registrar duties and running the Office of Student Life in the afternoon, she said.

“It will be a major juggling act on my part, but student affairs and (Office of Student Life) activities are two areas I’ve always been very interested in,” Castillo-Robson said. “I’m very excited. This is a great opportunity.”

It’s interesting that the administration feels that the Dean of Students is such a superfluous position that it can be served simultaneously by the University Registrar. In fact, many students (including myself) have felt for a while the the entire Office of Student Life is a redundant and meaningless organization that could be scaled down and rolled into other offices, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in student fees. I mean, let’s look at what the OSL does effectively that can’t be done in by other administrative offices:

  1. The room reservations, group registration, and document checks can be done by a computer as easily as checking out by computer at Home Depot.

Hard to satisfy union employees with computers though.

    Yeah Ben, that’s true… and
The ASUC is a meaningless organization that could be ELIMINATED, saving over 1.5 million dollars in student fees.

  4. This is a foolish remark: “It’s interesting that the administration feels that the Dean of Students is such a superfluous position that it can be served simultaneously by the University Registrar.”

This statement acts like the University could have found someone who is not working and is just sitting around to fill the job temporarily. Yeah, like just call your local temp agency and fill the Dean of Students job.

What Cal is doing is what happens in ANY organization when someone leaves. It is rare that a position, especially an important one, can be filled in 2 weeks — the typical notice given when the incumbent is leaving. So in the meantime they find someone internal to handle both positions. It’d be crazy to take someone from the outside to act as interim, so you end up with someone internal and that forces the overlap.

Think about what you write before you push the post button — or at least have SOME experience in organizational behavior & structure before you mouth off like this.
