Dean Campbell Returning to Berkeley
Tom Campbell, the currently-on-sabbatical Dean of UC Berkeley’s Haas Business School, will be returning to his post just one week after the November 8 election. Campbell has had a large role in the planning process and campaigns of many of the initiatives that the Governor’s office is backing.
From the East Bay Business Times:
He left the Haas job on a temporary basis in December 2004 to become the state director of finance under Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. More recently, he took a leave from that job to join Schwarzenegger’s campaign to get several measures passed in a controversial special election the governor has called for Nov. 8.
Campbell now plans to return to his UC-Berkeley job shortly after the election. Acting Dean Richard Lyons announced Campbell’s return to Haas staff and faculty earlier this month. Haas officials said details on the transition will be announced in a few weeks.
It will be interesting to see Campbell as a foil to Boalt Dean Christopher Edley and Chancellor Birgeneau, both of whom have been bringing some fairly liberal policies and projects to the campus.

In my interactions with Dean Campbell, he is extraordinarily reasonable and prudent. I mean to say that when he engages with one that vehemently disagrees with him, his approach is respectful. I expect no problem arising from the interactions between Campbell and administrators.

Thank God for the political balance that Campbell brings.
To be fair, Edley is no slave to the public-school mentality that Birge is–his efforts to privatize certain law school operations is highly laudable.
