Power Outage Affects Large Portions of Southside
Initial reports are that an underground transformer blew around 130 PM. The blast sent a manhole cover flying on Bancroft Way, just west of Telegraph. The manhole hit a car, whose driver was not injured. Power was out for just short of four hours, and seems to have returned to most areas near campus.
This scenario is very similar to that which occured in Union Square about a month ago, where a storefront was severely damaged and a woman passing by was badly injured. If the timing had been slightly different, the situation could easily have been much more grim.

I wonder if that would be covered by my insurance…

I was 15 feet from the thing when it blew. At first I thought it was was just a blown tire on the car, but when flames and smoke started coming from the manhole…
By the way, it doesn’t hurt to have Berkeley PD’s emergency number in your cell phone. It’s 510-981-5911. UCPD’s number is 510-642-3333.

Many UNCONFIRMED sources have reported that it was some type of a rudimentary bomb that some douche decided to set off in the sewer.

The Daily Cal reported that the driver was taken to the hospital because he collapsed during an examination.

Gregor said something about Asians being “an uptight people” and “Asian woman don’t think sex is a real thing until they are 30.” I kept waiting to for him to go somewhere with the comment, but apparently, he got turned down on the MySpace dating community or something.

Ben, that Wikipedia bio is horribly inaccurate. It takes quotes out of context. If you need the proof visit the library and look at the writings that it references.

James Watson, of ‘Watson and Crick’, who were able to first report the structure of DNA when electron microscopes improved, is similar to that.
When he came to campus to give some sort of honorary talk a couple years ago, people were reported scared by what a nut he is. I still see articles quoting him as an expert on other issues that don’t bring up his eugenics ideas.
At his talk, he was doing things like showing photos of fat smiling people and thin unhappy people and saying that people with the thin gene are harder workers because they aren’t easily satisfied so they strive more. Then he showed photos of happy people with dark skin and unhappy norwegians and was going down the same line saying that white people genetically are driven to work harder. The thing is, the only way there would be a mechanism for a discrete behavioral trait and another trait such as skin color to be linked would be if humans asexually propagated like bacteria/plants/snails/one lizard. However, people have recombination and what he was saying was really dumb.

Uh… I think you need to brush up on your genetics a bit, cp. Recombination isn’t going to do a whole lot when people self-select (which they do).
Comment by Beetle — September 21, 2005 @ 11:35 am
cp, two traits can have an extrinisic correlation (as opposed to an intrinsic correlation) and not be dependent on one another necessarily. An example is blonde hair and blue eyes.
