Fighting Illini Latest Victims of California’s Manifest Destiny

After getting off to a poor start in the first half, the Golden Bears outscored the Illinois Fighting Illini 28-3 in the second half to win 35-20.

ESPN Recap

Illini

Despite having a starting QB, RB, and two offensive lineman injured, the Golden Bears showed their talent depth, putting to rest any claims of Cal being towed by Marshawn Lynch. Backup Justin Forsett ran for 187 yards and two touchdowns. QB Joe Ayoob did not have his greatest game, but went 9 for 17, going 131 yards and throwing one touchdown pass.

This was the first loss for the Fighting Illini, a team many consider underrated. They are a young team with lots of talent, and are being guided by former Florida coach Ron Zook.

Cal will play New Mexico State next week in New Mexico. NMSt is a team that perennially occupies the bottom half of the WAC conference, and the game is projected to be a warm-up for Cal’s Pac-10 home-opener against Arizona.

  4. retract the attempted correction of homeopener. I re-read and saw that it reads pac ten home opener, which is correct. Nothing worse then being wrong when trying to correct someone.

  5. No Anon - you were right - I meant to say Pac-10 in the original (obviously, since I’ve been to two home games this year already, it isn’t the homeopener) but forgot to. I went back and edited it to add the qualifier.
