Cal football player Mike Tepper and Cal volleyball player Camille Leffall were attacked by two men near Telegraph and Dwight at around 1:15 AM Sunday morning. The two men had pulled up along side them in their vehicle and harassed Leffall. As they tried to cross behind the car, it pulled into reverse. Tepper pushed Leffall aside, as both got hit by the car and Tepper was run over twice. A police officer was a block away and chased down the car, apprehending the two in the car.

  1. Tepper:
“From what the police told me, the guys who ran me over were not drinking, not on drugs. They were sober. What kind of people would do something like that?”

Welcome to Berkeley. Ugh. Poor kid. Glad to see he’s alive and recouperating though.

  2. Jesus, that’s scary. Nice scoop by Jay Heater. I love how Tepper credits Tedford at the end.

  3. different municipalities can be run so differently. Contrast this zero tolerance policy by the hippie sister university, UC Santa Cruz. Imagine if there were someone who just has an irritable personality disorder, and they could start calling in anyone they don’t like, or a slight noise and they would get a big fine http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/archive/2005/June/29/local/stories/02local.htm
Meanwhile in San Francisco or Oakland or San Jose, if you get something stolen under $100, police won’t even come, and elderly mentally ill hang out in their spot on Shattuck day in and out.

  4. Wow, I’m glad he’s alive.

  5. sometimes this place disgusts me. Some fucker who wanted my wallet tried to assault me two semesters ago, but I was fortunate enough to outrun him. Tepper obviously wasn’t so lucky. What frustrates me is that people seem to just accept this as a matter of fact instead of doing something to change it. Let’s raise an ASUC army!

  6. Both of them are i n my summer school class… I was wondering why I havent seen him in a while. They are both cool people

  7. I asked the mayor what he thought about crime in the campus area…he said that numbers were inflated and Berkeley PD was doing more then ever. God I hate Bates.

    Comment by letcal — June 30, 2005 @ 11:22 am

  8. crime is supposed to be at its lowest level under Bates - not just by 20% or so, but 3X lower than in 1992 or something.

  9. anyone know the racial group of the assailants?

    Comment by anon54 — June 30, 2005 @ 1:27 pm

  10. No surprise that these guys are from Oakland. Erect a fence, I say. And for God’s sake, clean up People’s Park.

  11. What does race of the attackers have anything to do with this?

    Comment by Anonymous — June 30, 2005 @ 5:57 pm

  12. i would like to know for my personal information.

  13. What personal information?

    Comment by Anonymous — June 30, 2005 @ 6:53 pm

  14. What is the predominant race of that collection of wingnuts in front of Cafe Med and Intermezzo and Cody’s and the empty lot at Haste and Telegraph, and that one immobile portly bum in front of the Fenwick who wants a cigarette ? No problem with them, naturally. They would be much more mildly threatening compared to Oakland people.

    Comment by ella — July 1, 2005 @ 7:44 am

  15. Prop. 54 was defeated. It’s still completely to collect racial classifications.

    Comment by anon54 — July 1, 2005 @ 11:18 am

  16. It’s legal, but is it right? Why do you want to know? I can’t imagine for any possibly good reasons.

    Comment by Anonymous — July 1, 2005 @ 11:22 am

  17. who are you to determine what is or isn’t a “good reason”?

    Comment by anon54 — July 1, 2005 @ 1:36 pm

  18. When some drunk frat boy nearly kills somebody because he won’t walk two blocks instead of using his jeep, I mostly hear whining about losing keg parties. Now this happens and I hear “Put up a fence!” Hypocrites I tell ya!

    Comment by jonp — July 1, 2005 @ 5:47 pm

  19. did the drunken frat boy deliberately target the young woman that he hit?

  20. We’ll never know for sure, will we?

    Comment by H+M — July 1, 2005 @ 6:07 pm

  21. Because I happen to have the knowledge you seek but I can’t imagine you’re pursuing it for any good reasons.

    Comment by Anonymous — July 1, 2005 @ 6:12 pm

  22. so you believe in censorship? you don’t support the free flow of information?

    Comment by anon54 — July 1, 2005 @ 7:04 pm

  23. If Prop 54 had passed maybe we wouldn’t be asking questions like “what was the race of the attacker”. Right is a matter of opinion. The point is that in the spirit of defeating prop 54, we should be examining people’s races and therefore make judgments about people based on their race.

To the other anonymous, did you vote for Prop 54?

    Comment by Anonymous — July 1, 2005 @ 7:05 pm

  24. jonp: did you have a poor experience in the Greek system? You tend to make generalizations about Greeks without knowing them personally. We generally call this kind of thinking prejudice. Kind of like saying “blacks are criminals”, “Asians speak funny”, “Hispanics are uneducated”, or “whites are always privileged”, “Arabs bomb planes”, “Jews are money hungry cheapskates”, “Indians are only good for working on computers”, “engineering students are losers.” Stereotyping doesn’t make you look very intellgent.

  25. I’m sorry, I didn’t know I was obligated to give information when demanded. I made a simple request, all I want is a decent answer.

    Comment by Anonymous — July 1, 2005 @ 7:21 pm

  26. Perhaps the race of the attackers will allow us to know which races to stay away from when we walk down the street. By the way I voted against Prop 54 because I think we should be able to judge people based upon their race.

  27. Umm let’s remember the point of the story. He might have saved the life of a friend and is out for the football season.

    Comment by calalum05 — July 1, 2005 @ 9:18 pm

  28. So which generalizations about Greeks has jonp made in this thread specifically? And if he has made none on this thread, then why do you think this thread is the appropriate forum to discuss his supposed dislike of Greeks?

    Comment by H+M — July 2, 2005 @ 9:07 am

  29. i agree, calalum05…100%…

    Comment by H+M — July 2, 2005 @ 9:08 am

  30. “When some drunk frat boy”… if you look at his other comments he seems to generalize that Greeks are a bunch of drunks. Besides, people also get drunk at co-ops, house parties, and other areas. Many members of my fraternity do not drink. There’s probably a higher percentage of people that don’t drink in my fraternity than if you took 10 random college students and asked them if they drink.

Don’t get me wrong, I know a lot of people in fraternities and sororities who are drunks, overtly promiscuous and outright jerks. jonp’s remarks about that drunk frat guy is like me saying “how about those black guys that steal.” It’s just not right.

    Comment by Anonymous — July 2, 2005 @ 12:24 pm

  31. To clarify, not that I believe black people are all thieves, or that is even a fair characterization. People of all races steal. But jonp’s remarks make it sound like fraternities are all about drinking and causing trouble.

  32. um, it’s clear that jonp made that statement in order to point out the racism of all of you slow-witted cal students in this thread, to which you are responding with even more clueless statements.

  33. “um, it’s clear that jonp made that statement in order to point out the racism of all of you slow-witted cal students in this thread, to which you are responding with even more clueless statements.”

Yeah, you’re pretty smart, aren’t you. You probably don’t even know what racism is.

  34. I agree, Ella…I was just trying to say that this probably isn’t the time or place to go off on some tangent about how unfair life is for frat boys at Cal.

    Comment by H+M — July 3, 2005 @ 12:32 pm

  35. Who said life was unfair for frat boys? I certainly didn’t. I just said it’s not cool for someone to stereotype.

    Comment by Anonymous — July 3, 2005 @ 1:14 pm

  36. Wasn’t it an athlete - not a fraternity guy - anyway? Not that’s it’s okay, but at least get your stereotypes straight. Everyone knows the gays love Barbara Streisand… or was it the Jews???
