Computer stolen containing grad student information
A computer was stolen on March 11th from a campus with possibly sensitive data such as Social security numbers that could be used for identity theft. Newscenter has more details. This has been the second case of theft involving computer information in the past year. You may recall last October, a hacker broke into a University computer that contained the information of over 1.4 million people (see Calstuff post)

If you fear your information was compromised, head over to http://newscenter.berkeley.edu/security/grad/, where they list the numbers for all the credit reporting agencies. Call one of them and have them put an alert on your information.* Individuals who submitted applications for graduate school at UC Berkeley for the semesters between Fall 2001 and Spring 2004
* Graduate students who registered at UC Berkeley from Fall 1989 through Fall 2003
* Recipients of doctoral degrees from 1976 through 1999
* Other small groups who will be notified individually
There’s also a toll free number to call, 1-800-372-5110, where individuals can learn whether their information was among the data stolen or you can also send an email to idalert@berkeley.edu.
